Set up a Socratic sparring partner for revision

A chatbot's default is to explain, which puts the student back in the passive seat. Inverted, it becomes the questioner: probing, asking for examples, hunting the edge of what the student can defend. That's self-explanation and retrieval doing the work, with the AI as the prompt rather than the source. (Manning's ai-socratic-dialogue-designer skill builds this pattern; the hints-only evidence from Bastani et al., 2025, is the reason the no-lecturing rule matters.)

In practice

Quiz me on [topic] Socratically. Rules:
- Only ask questions, one at a time. Never explain unless I say "explain".
- Start easy, get harder. Push on anything vague I say.
- If I'm wrong, don't correct me; ask a question that exposes it.
- Every 5 questions, summarise what I know and where I'm shaky.

• Demo it live once so students see the point is being questioned, not answered.
• The every-5-questions summary is the student's exit ticket: have them bring the "where I'm shaky" list to class.
