Tell it the grade level in the first sentence

Reading level drifts upward unless you pin it early. Say it before the task, not after.

AI output defaults to an educated-adult register. If the grade level arrives late in your prompt, or only in a follow-up "make it simpler," the structure and examples are already adult-shaped, and simplifying afterwards mostly just shortens sentences. Lead with the audience and everything is built for them from the first word.

In practice

First sentence, every time: "I teach Grade 4. Write..." Audience before task.
Be concrete about what the level means when it matters: "vocabulary a 9-year-old reads independently; sentences under 15 words; no passive voice."
Test it: paste a sample of your students' actual reading material and ask the model to match that register instead of guessing.
